Saskatoon Summer Players
Saskatoon Summer Players (SSP) strives to create and enrich community by producing the highest quality, volunteer-based, musical theatre.
It has been nearly a full year since our theatres shut down across the globe due to the COVID-19 pandemic, completely devastating the global theatre industry. As many of you know, Saskatoon Summer Players sought to find a way to continue to safely create and deliver the musicals that we all know and love during this difficult time. We are pleased that we were able to find a way to not only produce The Addams Family, but deliver it to approximately 3,000 people around the world. We forged new ground, we learned A LOT, and we are thankful no one became sick in the process.
Sadly, life has not resumed to the level of “normal” that is necessary to move forward with SSP’s production of Mamma Mia! which was postponed from 2020 to June/July of 2021. The restrictions have intensified from those that were in place during The Addams Family rehearsals and presentation, and with a new, more contagious version of the COVID-19 coronavirus being identified, the Board has made the difficult decision to cancel our production of Mamma Mia!.
Perhaps we will be able to re-program the show in the future, when the circumstances have changed, but without any concrete idea of when that may be, the Board is not able to set a date at this time. If you previously purchased a ticket to see Mamma Mia! please contact the Persephone Theatre box office at 306.384.7727 to receive a full refund.
With vaccinations starting to roll out, we hope it won’t be long before we are able to consider programming large-scale, in person, fully staged musicals again, but until then, SSP will be shifting its focus to providing learning opportunities for our members and fostering connections with our community. More information about this will be coming soon.
It has been a heck of a year that has not been easy for anyone. Please know that the Board of SSP is doing all that they can to ensure that SSP members are given opportunities for growth during this extended lockdown, as well as ensuring that SSP will be ready to jump back into staging live musicals as soon as we are safely able to do so. Until then, please take good care of yourself and each other.
For over 50 years we have been creating musical theatre magic in the city of Saskatoon and we couldn’t do it without the support of our community. Join us on the stage, behind-the-scenes, as a sponsor, or as a donor and we promise that you will never forget it!
